How Iowa Virtual Academy’s Special Needs Program Can Help Students Succeed
At Iowa Virtual Academy, success starts with meeting learners where they are. For students with special needs, that support is intentional and deeply personal.
IAVA’s Special Needs Program, which serves hundreds of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), is designed to provide flexible, individualized instruction while giving students a sense of belonging.
Students who are enrolled in the program represent a wide range of needs that require additional support. Some students in the program are overcoming learning disabilities in areas such as reading, math, writing, adaptive behavior, executive function, or speech and language skills.
IAVA also takes a “general education first” approach, where the students in the program are not isolated from their peers and can fully participate in their core general education classes. Students receive special education services as an added layer of support to ensure they remain part of a shared classroom community.
Once a student with an IEP applies to IAVA, the school then works with state and local agencies to review and screen the IEP to make sure that services can be provided as they are written. After enrollment, special education teachers are connected directly with the families to learn more about each student’s background, to answer questions, and to collaborate on a plan tailored to a student’s needs.
Students who could benefit from extra help participate in small group sessions that typically include four to seven students led by a dedicated special education teacher.
Two of the strengths of IAVA’s virtual environment are its flexibility as well as the individual assessment it provides from teachers to identify specific skill gaps and monitoring of progress. These benefits allow students to balance coursework with extracurricular commitments, travel, or other responsibilities while still receiving live special education support.
Even in a virtual learning environment, instruction remains hands-on and creative. Teachers regularly adapt materials to meet students’ functional needs. For example, they might break down the course content differently for a student, adjust the pace of instruction, or introduce other interactive and visual tools to help students stay engaged. Overall, creating different approaches for the students in the program aim at closing any learning gaps and help build their confidence.
Human connection is also at the center of the program. Each student has a consistent special education teacher who serves as a trusted point of contact. Students have regular live sessions, and parents are often closely connected as well. This type of open collaboration strengthens student outcomes. For example, “what I need” sessions are created as special help meetings to support students who might be struggling in certain classes, offering a collaborative team-based approach to ensure students are fully supported.
Families come to IAVA for many reasons. Some have a desire for a different educational experience or greater flexibility. Some want access to services that are not available locally or are looking for a fresh start after previous challenges in traditional school settings. No matter the reason, IAVA’s Special Needs Program offers structure, support, and an opportunity for success.
