How One Young Mom Used Credit Recovery to Graduate Early and Build a Future for Her Family
Annalise was a freshman at a brick-and-mortar public school in the Quad Cities area when she learned she was pregnant. There were no daycare programs in her area, and attending class in person all day wasn’t going to work. But Annalise’s family already had a connection to Iowa Virtual Academy (IAVA).
Her younger sister had already enrolled and thrived there after struggling with bullying at her previous school. The teachers were supportive, the schedule manageable, and the experience positive, so when Annalise needed a new path, IAVA was the first place her family looked.
She enrolled for her sophomore year, and things clicked right away. The virtual format gave her room to attend prenatal appointments, take care of responsibilities at home, and still show up for live classes and complete her coursework.
“It was organized perfectly,” Annalise said. “You still have time to do things on your own.”
The Path to Credit Recovery
After her daughter was born, the demands for her time grew. She loved IAVA, but juggling a full course load with a newborn pushed her to explore other options. At first, her family considered a GED, but Annalise wanted to finish strong and graduate with a traditional high school diploma.
That’s when her counselor introduced her to credit recovery.
The program allowed Annalise to take more classes at a pace that worked for her, condensing her remaining coursework and accelerating her path to graduation. Her parents were skeptical at first. They worried she might fall behind without the structure of a traditional schedule. But Annalise trusted herself, and the results proved her right.
She graduated early.
Life After Graduation
With school behind her, Annalise now works full time. She’s exploring online courses at her local community college, with plans to study ultrasound technology. The career interest was born of her own experience with the tech, and a former boss in the field who spoke highly of the work. Annalise wants to support other young mothers the way people supported her.
“I want people to know that there are options, and you are going to get through it,” she said. “[IAVA] made everything easier for me.”
Annalise isn’t shy about recommending IAVA. Her best friend recently enrolled as a freshman and already loves it. When it comes to credit recovery, she is direct about what it takes. The workload is real, and there are more classes and assignments. But if a student is willing to put in the effort, the payoff is well worth it.
For Annalise, that payoff is a diploma she’s proud of, a career path she’s excited about, and more time with her family.
