A Good Education Shouldn’t Require a New Mortgage

For many families, the cost of a good school doesn’t show up on a tuition bill. It shows up in a mortgage payment.

Recent research has found that nearly two-thirds of parents have either moved or seriously considered moving to access a better public school district. Many of those who relocated made significant financial sacrifices to make it happen, from taking on higher housing costs to delaying major purchases and cutting back in other areas of their budgets.

The same research found that more than 90% of surveyed parents believe families with greater financial resources have better school options available to them. And tellingly, more than 8 in 10 believe that where a child lives shouldn’t determine the quality of education available to them.

Those findings reflect what families have been saying for years: Parents want options.

They want an educational environment where their child can thrive. They want strong teachers, meaningful support, and opportunities that align with their child’s individual needs. Most of all, they want confidence that their child’s future is not limited by geography.

Educational Access Beyond ZIP Codes

The good news is that, for many Iowa families, finding the right educational fit no longer requires packing boxes or stretching a household budget to the breaking point.

For the past 15 years, Iowa Virtual Academy (IAVA) has served students from communities across the state. IAVA families choose virtual education for a wide range of reasons, including greater flexibility, personalized pacing, and better accommodations for health-related needs. What matters most is finding the setting where a child can grow, engage, and succeed.

A highly rated school district will continue to be an important consideration for many families, and of course, all parents want to give their children access to the best opportunities available. But before taking on a larger mortgage, changing addresses, and leaving the community you call home, it’s worth taking a closer look at all the educational options available.

For many Iowa families, finding the right fit isn’t so far away after all.
