Iowa Virtual Academy’s Happyology Club Helps Students Build Connection and Confidence
“You matter beyond just a state test or a grade.”
That philosophy inspired 11th grader Keeli to create Happyology, a student-led club at Iowa Virtual Academy (IAVA) focused on positivity, belonging, and meaningful connections among students.
What began as one student’s idea has grown into a welcoming space where students can encourage one another and form friendships that extend beyond the virtual classroom.
An Idea That Found a Home
The concept for Happyology started several years ago when Keeli attended a brick-and-mortar school. Although she believed in the idea, she struggled to find others interested in bringing it to life.
After enrolling at Iowa Virtual Academy (IAVA), she found educators who embraced the concept and helped turn it into a reality. Today, Keeli helps lead club meetings alongside teachers Sarah Fortin and Renee Mente.
“If you add -ology to something, it means ‘the science of.’ Happyology for us means the science of happy,” Keeli said. “We try to make it a safe environment where everyone is welcome and there’s no judgment.”
Creating a Place Where Students Feel Valued
Happyology encourages students to focus on self-esteem, personal growth, and the qualities that make each person unique. Club discussions often center on encouraging quotes and activities designed to help students feel comfortable sharing with one another.
For Keeli, the goal is to remind students that their value extends far beyond academic performance.
“We want to show that students matter beyond what they can contribute. You matter beyond just a state test or a grade,” she said.
Meetings frequently include icebreakers, conversations about what makes students happy, creative projects, and opportunities for members to share their interests.
Building Community in a Virtual Environment
One of the biggest benefits of the club has been the connections students make with one another. While students attend classes online, Happyology provides another opportunity to interact, collaborate, and build friendships.
“Happyology really fills that need for social connection,” said Sarah Fortin, IAVA teacher. “We have several students in multiple clubs. They become very good friends through the clubs, talking and finding out what each other likes.”
The club is also unique because it welcomes students in grades K–12. According to Fortin, Happyology is the only club at IAVA open to students across all grade levels. The club currently has 17 members and continues to grow, creating opportunities for students of different ages to connect and learn from one another.
Looking Ahead
Although the school year is just getting underway, club leaders already have plans to expand Happyology’s impact throughout the school community. Ideas include sharing a weekly inspirational quote in school newsletters and creating video messages that encourage students throughout the year.
As Iowa Virtual Academy (IAVA) celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, Happyology is an example of how student ideas can shape meaningful experiences for the entire school community. What began as one student’s vision has become a place where students can build confidence, find encouragement, and create lasting connections.
