Enrollment and Attendance FAQs
Who is eligible to attend Iowa Virtual Academy (IAVA)?
Any student in grades K–12 who resides in Iowa and successfully submits an open enrollment application is eligible for enrollment.
Learn more about the open enrollment process at our How to Enroll page. You can also visit the Iowa Department of Education for additional information.
What is open enrollment?
Open enrollment is the process by which parents/guardians residing in one Iowa school district may enroll their children in another Iowa school district. Learn more at the Iowa Department of Education.
How many of my children can I enroll in IAVA?
Because IAVA provides the lesson plans and materials needed for grades K–12, many parents find it easy to enroll multiple children in the program.
What does it cost to attend IAVA?
Since IAVA is a public school program, there is no tuition. IAVA provides a state-licensed teacher and all instructional materials for the program. However, students and families will be responsible for providing some consumable materials (such as printer ink and paper). In addition, families are required to provide their own computers and internet access to participate in the program.
What is the attendance policy?
As Iowa public school students, all students enrolled in IAVA must comply with the state-required minimum number of 180 instructional days. Attendance will be logged daily in the Online School by the Learning Coach.
Can our family take a vacation during the school year?
The school calendar includes school “holidays” or vacation time. Whenever possible, family vacations should align with school vacation days. Extended family travel (more than three days) except during normal school vacation periods requires written notification and vacation contract approval by the head of school or designee. This should be completed at least one week before the extended absence.
Does IAVA offer full- or part-time kindergarten?
IAVA offers full-time enrollment for kindergarten students who are five years old before September 15 of the upcoming school year.
