Meet Our Leadership and Support Staff Team
Our administrative and support staff is committed to ensuring the finest education possible for your children. Providing expert tools and strategies, teaching materials and parent support, our leadership team is dedicated to making sure that you have what you need to deliver a well-rounded, enriching education to your children. Here are some of the people who maintain our high standards of education.
Steven Hoff, Head of School
Mr. Hoff has been with K12 since 2010, and the Head of School at IAVA since it opened in 2012. Mr. Hoff brings a wealth of expertise with his past experiences in education. He is originally from Minnesota but has now called Iowa "home" since 2012. Mr. Hoff holds a bachelor's degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN and a Master's in Educational Leadership from Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI. Mr. Hoff enjoys spending time with his wife, sons, and daughter, along with hunting, fishing, being a river rat, and really just being outdoors. Mr. Hoff is an avid MN. Vikings fan! Mr. Hoff enjoys the interaction with his students and staff. Mr. Hoff loves proving that socialization happens in the online environment!
Amanda Braverman, Academic Administrator
Amanda began her position as IAVA Academic Administrator in 2019. She was previously the Family Academic Support Liaison at IAVA for three years. Prior to that, Amanda taught music for the school for many years. She was also a learning coach to some of her own children and uses that experience to help her in her role supporting students and their support system. She received her undergraduate degree in education from Wartburg College, and her graduate degree in educational leadership from Drake University. Her past work experiences include everything from teaching preschool through high school, college, and even supervising and teaching the professional development for college teachers. She is passionate about education! She enjoys traveling and learning about the United States and other countries around the world, but also enjoys walks and jogs around her neighborhood and spending time with her family. Her favorite part about online education is that it can meet the individual needs of diverse students within one school.
Judy Tepper, School Operations Manager
Judy joined the IAVA team in August of 2017. Ms. Tepper received her BA in Journalism and Mass Communications at Iowa State University. After graduation she moved to the East Coast where she worked in advertising and exhibit sales as well as customer service. After returning to Iowa she worked at the Clayton Ridge School District as a member of their library staff. She worked there for 12 years before joining IAVA. She is happy to be back in Iowa and a member of the IAVA team. The families and students are Ms. Tepper's favorite part of working at IAVA. They are all very appreciative to have this opportunity and are simply great to work with.
Kelsey Boots, K-7 School Counselor
Ms. Boots graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in Family Services and Mental Health and a Master of Arts in Professional School Counseling. She spent time in the Waterloo School District and the Linn-Mar Community School District. Aside from being a school counselor, she worked 8+ years in childcare with ages 3-12, working on student social and emotional skills. Ms. Boots loves spending time with her pup, Payton (named after Walter Payton) and her family. She loves the online learning setting because it allows her to meet the needs of her students on a more individual basis. It also provides them with a more comfortable setting to talk. “It’s also a fun way to get to learn about where each student is from across Iowa!”
Luci Wulfekuhle, 8-12 School Counselor
Ms. Wulfekuhle is the K-12 grade Professional School Counselor and has been with IAVA since 2016. Luci earned her Bachelor of Science in Health, Wellness and Recreation from the University of Dubuque. Luci’s teaching certification is in K-12 Physical Education, K-12 Health Education and K-12 Athletic Coaching from Clarke University; and her Master of Science in Education is in Professional School Counseling for grades K-12 from Buena Vista University. She spent her first 6 years in education as a Health and Physical Education Teacher for a brick and mortar school. She has spent the last several years as a Professional School Counselor in the brick and mortar and virtual school setting. What she likes best about working in the online setting is the ability to support her students on a more personalized level that focuses on the students’ needs on an individual, social, emotional and educational basis.
Ami Kercheval, Special Programs Manager
Ms. Kercheval joined the IAVA team in 2020 as Special Programs Coordinator where she oversees any students with special programs including: special education, 504 plans, advanced learners, and English Language Learners. She lives in the Des Moines area with her husband, their four children, and their dog Daisy. Her family likes to cook together and be outside in the sun and be active. She enjoys cooking, sewing, and definitely reading! Ms. Kercheval has been in the field of education for 18 years now spending many of those years with Des Moines Public Schools prior to joining the IAVA/K12 team.
Brenda Oldenkamp, K-5 Advisor
Ms. Oldenkamp is the K-5 Advisor for Iowa Virtual Academy and has been with IAVA since 2016. She received her undergraduate degree in English education from Northwestern College in Orange City, IA, and a master’s degree in education and a 5-12 reading endorsement from Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. Ms. Oldenkamp has worked in education for over 10 years, and one of her previous teaching experiences was teaching English in Tokyo, Japan. Ms. Oldenkamp lives in northwest Iowa with her husband, and she enjoys spending time with her family, doing CrossFit with friends, knitting, baking, and reading. (One of her favorite authors is Jane Austen.) Her musical interests are playing the piano and playing harp. Ms. Oldenkamp is passionate about language and learning. She loves the way online learning allows students to work at their own pace, and she is eager to help students succeed in reaching their academic goals.
Carole Mackey, 6-8 Advisor
Mrs. Mackey has been a teacher for 12 years at the high school and middle school level. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in teaching for Speech and English from the University of Northern Iowa, and later earned a Master of Science in Business and Technology from Eastern Washington University and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Bastyr University. Mrs. Mackey holds a State of Iowa standard teaching license for 5-12 Language Arts and 7-8 Social Studies, Math, and Science. Outside the education field, Mrs. Mackey has held positions in public and private companies as a program manager, technical writer, and research analyst. She has also provided mental health counseling in the clinical setting, focusing on family therapy and adolescent development. Mrs. Mackey enjoys taking walks, reading, and gardening. She believes that IAVA provides the type of environment that some students require to thrive and reach their potential, and loves connecting to students through technology.
Tyler Morris, 9-12 Advisor
Mr. Morris joined the Iowa Virtual Academy in 2020 as an academic advisor. He has a BA in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Iowa. His past experiences include teaching, coaching basketball, and even owning and operating an Italian restaurant. He is looking forward to getting to know everyone associated with IAVA and building relationships with the students. Some of Mr. Morris’ favorite things include basketball, pizza, Ticket to Ride, playing pickleball, and spending time with his family.
Molly Mellon, Registrar
Ms. Mellon joined IAVA in 2019 as registrar. She graduated from Loras College with a degree in Biology. Her interests include, but aren’t limited to: reading, anything outdoors, and attending her nephews’ various sporting events. She is excited to be working at IAVA with the staff and families.
Amy Squier, Registrar
Mrs. Squier joined the IAVA team in 2020. She received her BA in Accounting and Financial Management from Upper Iowa University. She has spent most of her career working in the financial industry with 401k plan administration. While living in Vancouver, WA, she had the opportunity to work as a Media Tech at Pleasant Valley School District. After two more moves, one to Tucumcari, NM and another to Phoenix, AZ, she and her family decided to return home to Iowa. This is her son’s second year with IAVA and they love the flexibility virtual school offers!
